The maker of the Low Cost Tablet, Akash Tablet, Datawind has stated that it has begun the supply of the New, Upgraded and Second version, of the Akash Tablet to IIT Bombay. The Upgraded version of the Low Cost Akash Tablet is named as Akash Tablet II.
Sunit Singh Tuli, CEO Datawind, said “Supplies are on to IIT Bombay. In the next few weeks, it should be launched. I do not have the exact date, but HRD Minister ( Kapil Sibal) has said he wants to launch on the anniversary date which is October 5″
He also added “The launch will depend on the Minister’s schedule, but it is not very far from now”.
He also stated that,”Out of 55 lakh orders, 4 to 5 per cent were pre-paid bookings. May be in a week or 10 days, all the pre-paid will be done. Then we will focus on pre-bookings. We are giving them offers to upgrade to Android 4.4 version”.
Previously Datawind had won the tender for manufacturing and supplying the upgraded and the latest version of the World’s Low Cost Tablet, Akash II. The price of the Akash II Tablet is Rs.2,616. The company also claims of receiving more 55 lakh orders from the general customer. The manufaturing company Datawind’s CEO has also stated that their company has cleared most of its Pre-Paid bookings and is now preparing to start focusing on supplies for the non-paid bookings.
The CEO of Datawind, Sunit Singh Tuli also said, “Out of 55 lakh orders, 4 to 5 per cent were pre-paid bookings. May be in a week or 10 days, all the pre-paid will be done. Then we will focus on pre-bookings. We are giving them offers to upgrade to Android 4.4 version”. He added that the company is producing and delivering 1,500 to 2,000 tablets each day which are being assembled within the country as well outside the country.
